School Grow Gardens

Gardens built directly on school grounds

In combination with the other projects focused on physical activity and eating healthier, our plan is to create gardens on the school grounds for the whole Charles M. Schenck Community School family to take part in. Here, there is a dire need for fresh produce and education on how to make healthier decisions when it comes to cooking meals. This project was made possible with funding from the Whole Kids Foundation. Thanks to their help, we are closer to achieving our goals.

Construction

Members from the SHIPS team, the CMS faculty, and CMS families came together to help build the gardens during the winter season of 2022.

Designs were made with the idea to allow teachers to give lessons while students gathered around the garden. Students and teachers could enjoy the wonderful outdoor environment while learning.

Once the temperature warmed, planting season began. Many of the students were excited to finally plant a variety of vegetables they had been caring for during the winter.

Finished Produce

The gardens thrived during the summer since the first planting event. A great assortment of  vegetables and herbs were produced and given to the CMS community.

One of our goals was to plant vegetables that were culturally relevant to the CMS community. Tomatoes, squash, lettuce, and a mix of herbs are a few of the plants that were decided upon.
